Marketplace: Reinventing the Rural Healthcare System

In an interview with Marketplace, Helmsley Program Officer Heidi Schultz and Dr. Anand Parekh, Chief Medical Advisor for Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC), recently shared highlights from BPC’s Helmsley-funded examination of the rural healthcare landscape and discussed how they would like to see the rural healthcare system transformed.

Both individuals emphasized the importance of assessing whether existing healthcare services align with what rural communities actually need. After this assessment is made, policymakers should support reforms to ensure that rural communities are obtaining the services they need from providers who are operating sustainably. In the interview, Heidi and Dr. Parekh also explained how value-based healthcare transformation could benefit rural providers if they are given proper support from policymakers to take this risk.
