Myanmar Designates First Marine Areas Protected by Local Fishing Communities

This Worlds Ocean Day, the Myanmar Fisheries Department designated the country’s first ever Locally Managed Marine Areas (LMMAs), thanks in large part to the efforts of grantee Fauna & Flora International.

In the last decade, the biodiversity of Myanmar’s Myeik Archipelago has diminished drastically due to overfishing. The new LMMAs aim to protect from unsustainable fishing practices, replenish fish stocks, and improve the livelihood of local fishing communities overall.
