T1D 2011-12 Camp Grants Initiative

Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) 2011-12 Camp Grants Initiative

In April 2011, the Helmsley Charitable Trust launched its Type 1 Diabetes Camp Grants Initiative to support camp scholarships (camperships) for youth throughout the United States. The $1.3 million initiative expands on the Trust’s 2010 pilot initiative and will allow more low-income youth with type 1 diabetes to attend summer residential or day camps nationwide in 2011 and 2012.

Grantees for the initiative were selected through a limited Request for Proposals (RFP) process in early 2011.  The 15 camps represent 14 different states and were selected for their commitment to providing educational diabetes management in a safe, fun environment. Most of the organizations awarded grants are members of the Diabetes Education and Camping Association (DECA) and accredited by the American Camping Association (ACA).

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) was also invited to apply for funding and received a grant to further broaden the Trust’s geographic impact on providing camperships to youth with type 1 diabetes.
