Barbara Fontanals Cirera

Associate Program Officer

Barbara Fontanals Cirera is an Associate Program Officer for the Helmsley Charitable Trust’s Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) Program. She helps to oversee the current research grants and identify new opportunities aimed to prevent T1D.

Prior to joining Helmsley, Barbara studied the role of epigenetics in the development of the most aggressive skin cancer type, melanoma. 

Barbara earned a Ph.D. in Molecular Oncology and Tumor Immunology from the Sackler Institute of Biomedical Sciences at NYU Langone Health. During her undergraduate career as a biology student at the University of Barcelona, she interned in Boston Children’s Hospital, University of Colorado Boulder, and Rice University. In her free time, she enjoys cooking with her family and traveling to remote countries.
