• Leona and Harry Helmsley

Our History

  • A Legacy of Giving

The Helmsley real estate empire began in the 1930s and made an indelible mark on the New York City skyline. Harry and Leona Helmsley also left a tremendous philanthropic legacy. During their lifetimes, the Helmsleys donated many millions of dollars to a wide range of causes, focusing primarily on health-related institutions and efforts.

The Helmsley Charitable Trust began its active grantmaking in 2008 after the passing a year earlier of Leona Helmsley, who left nearly all of the Helmsleys' estate to the Helmsley Charitable Trust, giving its Trustees the responsibility to decide which charitable purposes to support. Over the past 10 years, Helmsley has grown from a start-up to a global philanthropy that has committed more than $2.5 billion in grants.
