NPR recently featured Helmsley Program Officer Heidi Schultz in its coverage of the unique challenges and opportunities facing rural healthcare.

In the piece, Heidi describes how she has experienced some of these challenges as a rural resident, and emphasizes the need to ensure that rural communities have essential healthcare services. This doesn’t necessarily mean having a full-service hospital in every town. Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC) Chief Medical Advisor Dr. Anand Parekh discusses BPC’s Helmsley-funded exploration of the rural healthcare landscape and states that an evolution of rural hospitals and provision of primary care are necessary to better serve the needs of individuals living in rural communities in the most cost-effective manner.
