The PIANO Consensus Group Publishes Guidelines for IBD Management Around Pregnancy

The PIANO (Pregnancy Inflammatory bowel disease And Neonatal Outcomes) Consensus Group has developed the first international consensus guidelines on management of pregnancy for patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which includes Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Experts across six continents collaborated to address urgent clinical questions. The team is led by Uma Mahadevan, MD, and Millie D. Long, MD, MPH, and includes gastroenterologists, maternal-fetal medicine specialists, surgeons, researchers, and patient advocates.

With support from Helmsley, this groundbreaking work offers evidence-based recommendations on fertility counseling, medication safety, delivery planning, and infant outcomes. These guidelines will reduce uncertainty and improve care for people with IBD during and after pregnancy, filling critical gaps in care for these patients with evidence-based recommendations.

The PIANO study group has also made a video resource, available in eight languages, summarizing these findings here.
