April Dewey is an Associate Program Officer for Helmsley’s Rural Healthcare Program which is dedicated to ensuring communities of the rural upper Midwest have access to the highest quality healthcare.
Prior to joining Helmsley, April worked as a Grant Writer for the Avera Rural Health Institute where she led, facilitated, and worked with program staff to develop private, state, and federal grant proposals from inception to completion. April brings unique perspective, having had the opportunity to manage grants, both pre and post award, from the grantee’s vantage point. Prior to her work in philanthropy, a love of research, writing, and literature led her to pursue a career in education. April served as teacher and later Reading Specialist for ten years in the Sioux Falls School District where she helped children struggling with literacy grow their skills and build their confidence.
April holds a Master of Education from the University of Sioux Falls and graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education and Special Education from Augustana University. In her spare time, April enjoys spending time with her family, decorating, participating in local theatre, and aspires to someday audit painting and drawing courses from a local university and learn how to play the violin.
