How We Grant

Helmsley invests in research, ideas, projects, and technologies that provide solutions to challenges impacting lives across six program areas: Crohn’s Disease, Israel, Rural Healthcare, Type 1 Diabetes, Vulnerable Children in Sub-Saharan Africa, and New York City.

We are constantly looking for better ways of doing things. Helmsley invests in projects and programs that others cannot or will not fund. We work with our grantees to develop the right partnerships, we learn what works and what doesn’t.

Each and every grant we fund aims to meet the specific need of a community we serve through our six programs. To that end, Helmsley does not accept unsolicited grant proposals. Rather, our in-house experts seek partners to maximize impact. We do, on occasion, issue Requests for Proposals (RFPs) with a specific scope.

We do not accept unsolicited grant requests

Prospective grantees will be asked to complete a pre-proposal, which is the first step in the application process. Helmsley will review this before requesting a full proposal.

Yes, occasionally and with a specific scope. Any Requests for Proposals (RFPs) are announced on Helmsley’s website (helmsleytrust.org) and other media outlets as appropriate.

Helmsley generally funds public charities classified under Sections 501(c)(3), and either 509(a)(1) or 509(a)(2). Helmsley does not typically fund 509(a)(3), Type III supporting organizations. Helmsley also funds foreign organizations or institutions without 501(c)(3) status that are found to be equivalent to US-based public charities, and charitable projects at for-profit entities.
