African WHO Ministers Adopt PEN-Plus, an Innovative Measure to Contain Noncommunicable Diseases

This year, while gathered at the 72nd Session of the WHO Regional Committee for Africa (AFRO RC 72), WHO AFRO Member States adopted NCDI Poverty Network’s PEN-Plus initiative draft resolution. WHO/AFRO’s adoption of PEN-Plus as the regional strategy for addressing severe, chronic noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) like type 1 diabetes at first-level care facilities represents a paradigm shift in the regional approach to NCDs, expanding strategic focus from prevention to treatment.
